April Employee Spotlight – Randall (Rex) Rowlands

At ATS, our people are at the core of everything we do. This month, we’re proud to spotlight Randall Rowlands, better known as Rex, who plays a pivotal role as the Simulations’ System/Database Manager/Trainer at the NATO-Georgian Joint Training Evaluation Center (JTEC). In his role, Rex is responsible for all aspects of Virtual Battle Space 3 and 4 (VBS) systems, working closely with the Georgian Defense Force to support critical military training initiatives.

When asked about his biggest accomplishment at ATS, Rex shared that it’s the trust his colleagues place in him to assist with all facets of the contract — even those beyond his defined role. “Being leaned on as a trusted member of the team means a lot,” he says, reflecting his dedication and versatility.

Before joining ATS, Rex dedicated 21 years to the United States Army, serving as an Infantry First Sergeant. His distinguished military career included 63 months in combat across Afghanistan and Iraq. His extensive experience and leadership continue to shape the work he does today, helping him enhance military readiness and training for others.

Rex has been married to his wife, Samantha, for over 20 years, and they have four children: Alexis, Ashley, Aubrey, and Austin. When he’s not working, he enjoys spending time fishing with his son and watching his children excel in sports and other activities.

His colleagues might be surprised to learn that at 41, Rex still loves playing video games. In fact, his passion for gaming helped steer him toward his current career, where he combines personal enjoyment with professional fulfillment by training personnel on VBS platforms.

Rex sees ATS as filling a vital role in the military sphere, providing skilled civilian personnel who enhance military training and operations, ensuring continuity and preparedness for future challenges.

Rex’s advice to his teammates is simple yet powerful: “Remember to enjoy the family you have and all the things you do in this life. We are never guaranteed another day, so take the time to let everyone you love know they mean the most to you.”

As a veteran, Rex remains passionate about supporting fellow veterans, understanding firsthand the mental and physical challenges that come with a life of service.

While he doesn’t have a specific travel destination in mind, Rex considers himself fortunate to have experienced much of the world through both military and civilian service. No matter where he is, one thing remains constant: he cannot imagine life without his family.

Thank you, Rex, for your service and for being such an integral part of the ATS family!
